What is Model Based Definition?
Model-Based-Definition is a modern way of displaying manufacturing information in 3D models instead of first constructing them with conventional 2D drawings. This new method of creating intelligent 3D models can completely replace 2D drawings. All the necessary product manufacturing information can be easily added to a CAD model.
These include, for example:
- Specific manufacturing instructions
- Standard dimensions
- Geometric dimensions and tolerance data (GD&T)
- Reference features and reference levels
Classic approach vs Model Based Definition:
75% time saving
In this video, we show you not only how easy it is to use MBD, but also how little time you need for CAM programming compared to the classic approach.

Why is MBD important for companies?
With the digitalization and development of Industry 4.0, the MBD approach is becoming increasingly important in Germany. Model Based Definition provides engineers throughout the company and throughout the entire product life cycle with a consistent and shared basis on which they can model, measure, test and refine. This collaborative environment enables faster and more meaningful feedback loops, better decisions and products that can be brought to market faster.
This technology enables the easy and consistent exchange of technical information across an organization, which is perhaps as important as the nature of the technical information itself.
Advantages of the model-based definition
The use of Model Based Definition enables you to completely replace 2D drawings. This has a number of advantages:
- Cost reduction
- Fewer files to maintain
- Reduction of rejects and rework
- Less time spent creating and maintaining production documentation
- Improved product quality
- More safety and sustainability
- Faster time to market
How do I implement Model Based Definition?
A company planning to migrate from a 2D/3D environment to a 3D MBD environment has many things to consider. Key areas such as the migration of legacy data and the reuse of MBD data across the technical supply chain are often ignored, but are key to a successful MBD implementation.
We will show you how you can successfully implement Model Based Definition in your company. Take advantage of our webinars to learn more about the topic quickly and reliably and to put your questions to our experts.
What we offer
Implementation
We support customers in the selection and implementation of CAD and PLM solutions from Siemens Digital Industries Software, including modules for the creation and provision of MBD models.
Workshops
In workshops, we explain the benefits of MBD, identify the potential for rule sets in your company and define a roadmap for implementing the relevant tools.
Training courses
We train users specifically in the use of NX Model Based Definition and, if required, map customer-specific expertise on dimensions and tolerances in rules and libraries.
